Evening walk

Last I checked you all know me as a cynical individual well I haven't changed either in thought or in physical experience. The cynic in me just refuses to get out of my couch and start exercising, doing those push ups and running my shoe soles off. This is me I love my rice, I love the fast food joints and the only thing healthy I eat is a subway sandwich filled with loads of long island sauce.

The problem however is that I decided to take up walking yesterday. And well you would be happy to know that I gave it up, err no I have decided to cut down on such an outdoor and strenuous lifestyle. This is pretty early considering my previous standards of a week. The primary reason was simply that seeing myself walking reminds anyone on the road of a heavy block of wood on tooth pick stilts. They fear that the stilts may break and well the blob would just tumble over. But I do not give up. I have to lose weight ward off signs of a body that could be prone to diabetes, cardiac ailments, hypertension and the works.I start huffing and puffing 45 minutes into the brisk walk I undertake and well am absolutely not ashamed of finding out that a 60 year old overlaps me twice over. So the reason why I have decided to go easy is because a man's pride is more important. Let me reduce those rice plates and then maybe I can give Mr.Sharma a run for his money. Till then its the couch,TV and rotis for me.

But I will have my vengeance. My day will come.

Horizon: A new begining

Now contrary to my criticism of the glorification of RAIT's past I quite love the idea of one of its most celebrated monoliths: Horizon. Many may say RAIT stands for more but Horizon is still the definitive identity of the college. The celebration of the college, the students and the music, the celebration of its past and the future ahead is a memory which is enshrined in every alumni and every student.

But this time last year we were informed that it was Rhapsody a combined effort by all institutions under the DY Patil flagship that would replace Horizon. And despite the great potential that such an event could have had somewhere down the line we didn't quite put up a great show in 2009. Furthermore we were lead to believe that Horizon was no longer a valid option. Forward to August 2009, the swine flu outbreak and shutdown of the college for a week. The SUC which at that moment existed merely as a body on paper and was in the doldrums and completely dysfunctional. Horizon had been witnessed only by two batches in college the Fourth year and Third year students. And just our senior most batch had any idea of what it took to be part of organizing it.

Then came the good news, just as everything else in college it happened spontaneously and unexpectedly. The SUC was structured again and we were back in action. The first task was to get fresh blood into the system, inform the students, teachers and the management about our plans. The next task was to get back Horizon.
The idea of Rhapsody was perhaps the only issue on which I have seen the students, teaching staff and management of the college agree upon unanimously. Nobody wanted any part of it! Not that the three are on completely different pages but as a link between them we could safely say that we had the absolute support of everything RAIT behind us.

For all that we comment on Vijay Patil being too busy and not having the time we forget that he is quite open to any all suggestions made by students. The man is very approachable provided you get and appointment! But that is a task in itself. It took us a month or so to finally meet him and we gathered enough support from other colleges to forward our case. We stated our thoughts, our facts and the general consensus was reached fairly easily. I guess the man himself new that Horizon as a brand meant far more than a successful Rhapsody would ever have meant. The meeting lasted a mere 15 minutes. The verdict was simple get back Horizon and get back RAIT.

Well now that we have it back, the odds to achieve a good festival in the short time span available is very daunting. But this is a thrill and an adventure we are willing to endure. So I hope this 5th,6th and 7th of March 2010 you will witness a vintage celebration of RAIT.

Wishful Thinking

Dear Fairy God mother/Guardian Angel/Whoever you are,I know you are out there"

7/4 Angel street,
Heavenly Abode,
This Universe.

I hope the Celestial Postal system is a far better than the Indian one and that you do read this letter. Better yet I hope you exist. Now that I have exchanged pleasantaries let us cut to the chase.

In all my 21 years of existence you never did show up did you?
"I forgive you"
You didn't make me tall dark and handsome and rich (may be you succeeded rather well on the dark part).
"I forgive you"
You know you just stood there when I did not get that college I wanted, that girl I liked or that brand new BMW 7 series that I saw. But still my response is the same:
"I forgive you"

But cometh the time cometh the divine intervention!!!
Here are the list of other heavenly creatures I wan't to meet:

LADY LUCK:
I promise, I swear I will treat her with all the respect a lady (or god)deserves. I mean I just wan't to know why that crow shits on my brand new shirt or that speeding driver splashes mud over me during the rains and the perennial why does every screw up happen with me at the centre of it. I won't hit on her or try to keep her for myself, I just need to talk to her.

LORD GANESHA:
Just like that only yaar! I think this god is like super cool. I mean you have your angry and punish the evil gods, you have your Greek gods with 6 pack abs and then you have ganesha. elephant head, broken tusk, large ears, larger tummy, need I say more as to why I identify with him!!!

CUPID/KAMDEV/APHRODITE
Ok so you make me fall in love, but no one tells me about understanding and tolerating the girl in the relationship. Shouldn't your arrow of love come with this rider clause:"Statuary warning women cannot and should not and will not be understood. Any attempts to do the contrary will result in irrevocable damages."

Thanking you,

Yours truly,
Dham,
beloved Godson/benefactor/grateful to you for life

PS: You gotta intervene. Please I like the word serendipity, i need it, i believe in it, i wan't it,i beg of you please please please..... Beautiful word S-E-R-E-N-D-I-P-I-T-Y by the way.

An ode to a friend

To,
Arjun Kaushik,
Superhero/guru/friend/brother

I am still numb inside and some part of me always will be. But this is to celebrate your life and remember your legacy. Thank you for always being the witty one around. Thank you for being the superhero who groomed his sidekick and the guru that thought his Chela to be himself. Thank you for all the goodwill said and unsaid. Thank you for teaching me to laugh and enjoy a little more. I know you won't read this but to everyone else that does this is to remind them of the life you have lived and the indelible impression that you left behind.
To your family go our prayers and all our succour. To your soul the knowledge that we have cherished your being and will always do so.
This is what you wrote for me when you passed out of college and i intend to follow it.
"when my time comes,
forget the wrongs that i have done,
Help me leave behind some
reasons to be missed.
Don't resent me when you're feeling empty,
Just keep me in your memory,
Leave out all the rest."

Yours truly,

aravindhan nagarajan,
sidekick/Chela/n friend for eternity

HOW I BECAME AN OPTIMIST

What turns a die hard cynic,an absolutely negative and self obsessed narcissist into an optimist?
Well the answer to that is a little bit of faith and hope. Dear reader this post is as much as an insight to my way of thinking as it is an intirguing question that I pose to you.

You see giving up hope is only the first step to regainning it. Life is portal to many different regions. But the essential route that is to be taken to reach them is one filled with belief. Admit it, how many times have you succeeded if you think you are going to fail? How many new avenues will you dicover if you are cynical about every new route which you take?

The most endearing and heart warming stories in life are the ones in which there is always hope and faith. In the midst of trials and tribulations there is always a hero who rises to the occassion.
Odysseus accomplished his voyage because he always wanted to reach home one day.
Cinderella is enchanting as she is endearing to every young person because she achieves her dream. That ellusive dream which she dared to dream while she was a slave to her stepmother.

Is it not a bit of faith that compels us to do things which we would not do otherwise. Is it not a bit of blind self belief that pushes us to take risks and grab life by its throat. It takes just a push for a man to fall down from a steep cliff. In my life every cliff is built with cynicism and negativity. But the endless valley down below is filled with happiness, hope and faith. So just take that one step. From a cynic to an optimist. I assure you its something that is worth the risk.
